NOW URGENTLY RECRUITING TIMERS, TLCERS AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ADEPTS FOR EDITING
NOW URGENTLY RECRUITING TIMERS, TLCERS AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ADEPTS FOR EDITING
NOW URGENTLY RECRUITING TIMERS, TLCERS AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ADEPTS FOR EDITING

How to apply:

Install an IRC Program, join [email protected] and leave a message in the chat. If you have any questions, reply here or ask us on IRC. Above all, be patient! We will respond to you.

Role Outline for Translation Checkers:

Checking the script for translation errors, making sure translations are consistent with previous episodes and ensuring the editors don't stray from the original meaning too much.

Also, you'll need to be available for queries about the script and misc stuff, which means being idle in IRC for several hours a day, every day. You'll also need to learn how to use a FTP Program and Aegisub. While not strictly essential, it often helps to be current on the One Piece Manga. And it helps if you follow our releases, since you'll know our style.

TL;DR - You'll be idle in IRC whenever your computer is on, and once a week, you'll spend a few hours TLC'ing a script.

What you'll need to apply as a translator:

    1) A fluent command of both Japanese and English and are capable of translating between the two.
    2) Be 18 years of age or older.

Role description for Editors:

Editors apply their skills to scripts in order to provide flowing dialogue without deviating from the intended meaning of the translated Japanese. That is, editors choose their words carefully so as to not give false connotations. Editors work closely with TLCs to achieve the best possible translations while also ensuring that the resulting English properly conveys characterization (who the characters are) and voice (how the characters would speak if they were communicating in English).

What you'll need to apply as an editor:

    1) Fluency in English, at least at the level of current editors on staff.
    2) Be at least 18 years of age.
    3) An excellent understanding of the characters, settings, and plot of One Piece.

What you'll need to succeed in either role:

    1) An eye for detail, and the ability to proofread things well.
    2) Be at least mildly sociable and respect your fellow team members.
    3) Ability to give good criticism and take criticism well. (Emphasis on take, 'cause you'll probably take a lot)
    4) Free time to perform your role.

I don't think MSN itself exists anymore, the rules are just copy-pasted from ye olde days.

Life. Life is happening.

While they still do manage to find time, the collective amount of time our two TL/TLCs have between them has dwindled significantly. I myself am finding it a bit of a challenge to juggle this with my paid day job, but their schedules are definitely not as conducive as mine is to doing this unpaid service. I'm trying to squeeze in some independent learning to help ease the backlog, but I'm too easily distracted by things other things other than anime. :p

No because you can't find every anime subbed on every language, or at least decently subbed. Most subs other than English and maybe Spanish are usually translated versions of the English subs instead actual translation of the Japanese.

You are, of course, correct.

I wasn't trying to make any point, however I think writing "bilingual" made more sense in the context of this thread being about the languages Japanese and English. If I had written "trilingual" it may have confused things.

Funnily enough, Yify has actually gone down now.

You may have noticed some changes to this topic. Allow me to explain from my perspective:

I'm busy as fuck. Between my job, going to school, and apartment hunting, I've not been as productive as I like. And so...

Socky has put out the announce, and I've taken the liberty of amending the original post to reflect details specific to the editor role. I'm generally available for questions regarding editing, though hopefully the description answers most, if not all queries as far as what it is an editor does.

I haven't watched any One Piece for close to 200 episodes, never mind the recent openings. I'm only asking out of curiosity to see if any of the people from when I did watch the anime are still working.

You look at the Frequency spectrum. Go to first line of dialogue. Click left mouse button, drag across or click right mouse button. Hit a key for audio playback confirmation. Then press G to go to next line. Repeat until last dialogue line.

http://docs.aegisub.org/manual/Audio#Basic_audio_timing

You can even listen to music or turn on the news.

As someone who has done small amounts of timing in Aegisub in the past I'd say that ~1 hour for an episode would be optimistic at first for a total beginner who has to even ask what timing involves, but that might just be me sucking at timing more than average. Definitely with some experience, ~1 hour per episode is reasonable, though. Hell, the fastest timers I've known can do episodes that aren't excessively dialogue-heavy in nearly real time, so if you get really good at it, you might even be able to do it in 30 minutes. Especially for the more action-focused episodes

There are also a few slight extensions of the description above involving snapping dialogue to scene changes and adding lead-in and lead-out, but this can be largely automated IIRC.

If there are multiple lines on screen things can be a bit harder, and sometimes if the lines are long and with unclear pauses, it can be hard for someone with little idea of Japanese to know exactly where to finish timing one line and start timing the next to match meaning as well as possible, but these are rarer issues.

The last thing I'd mention is that while the job is mostly as simple as click, click, playback, fix if needed, next line, repeat, doing those same 5-6 actions repeatedly for an hour is quite monotonous. This is the main reason I never regularly timed for fansubs - I don't have the attention span to focus on such a repetitive and near-mindless task for that length of time regularly. If you're good at this kind of thing, though, then no problem.

Post by: King Puck on November 06, 2016, 04:34:59 PM
Timing these days mostly means resetting the uneven lead-in/out of the existing Crunchyroll subtitles. Very straightforward. It doesn't have to be done in one sitting, and as I said you can even listen to the News while you do it.

This was my initial concern. My knowledge of the Japanese language is very limited, so if a character/voice-over was giving a lengthy monologue then how would I know when the next line of subs should most appropriately appear? I'd be going more by the rhythm of their words, rather than actually knowing what they're saying.

When I get some time I'll try out a test example in Aegisub and see how I go.

For the record, I remember this happening at least once. Like, there was a scene way back in Marineford where Doflamingo was making a lengthy monologue to Crocodile and for a significant stretch of it, the timing was COMPLETELY off. I mean it didn't harm the story in any way as you still got WHAT he said, but the fact that the subtitles didn't sync up to WHEN he said it was a tad distracting...

But eh. At this point we're working off pretimed scripts anyway (not to mention most of the time I TLC after it's been timed and I'm picky about this sort of thing) so that's unlikely to happen any more.

Can you douchebags please stop scaring people away with your stories?
Timers don't need to know japanese. If they did they would be translators.
That was true before there were Crunchyroll subs, and even more so now that there are.

I was thinking more of even just the opening monologue/voice-over "The goals: the final island, Raftel... and the greatest treasure in the world, One Piece! etc."

However, if you're working off pretimed scripts from Crunchyroll, then would I be correct in thinking that the job of a timer is not so much to do the timing but more to just adjust the existing timing if necessary (which seems to be not too often these days)?

Well, it recently changed, but fair enough.
